Today is the International Lipstick Day. I Loooooove lipstick and I am so happy to show you an easy way to create your own make up bag.
This make-up bag used to be a hoodie in its former life! A grey hoodie with blue sleeves. My youngest son, Marcel, used to wear it.

The hoodie was quite tiny, size 146 cl, and one day it was too small and outgrown.
I put the hoodie into the collection of outgrown, worn out and pre-loved clothes, knowing that one day the hoodie would get a new life. As you can see I've been cutting pieces of that hoodie before.

I used parts of the hoodie to cut out squares for a grey sweater with Elvis application. You can find a tutorial to make that sweather here
Now I wanted to use the sleeves of the hoodie for a makeup bag. First I had to make the pattern.

You can easily make the pattern for this makeup bag;
You need a regular A4 sheet of paper.
Draw squares 3 cm / 1,2 inches in each corner of the paper.
Cut out the corners.
Fold the paper in the middle.
Draw squares at the fold and cut out.
When you unfold the paper, you have a square in the middle that is 6x3 cm / 2,4 x 1,2 inches.

Pin the pattern to your fabric and cut out. Seam allowance is included.
It is excellent to use jogging/sweater fabric for your make up bag as it is quite solid. If you sew the toiletry bag in a thinner fabric, for example a t-shirt fabric, you should definitely use interlining, otherwise it will be too sloppy.
Zig zag or overlock all along the edges.

If you, like me, sew the make up bag put out of a hoodie, it is excellent to reuse the zipper.
It is possible to cut and shorten the zipper but you must be careful . Leave the zipper fully closed and then fix the end of the zipper by burning and melting the plastic with a lighter. Hold the flame towards the end of the zipper for a few seconds so that the plastic melts. Be careful and make sure that you are standing by the kitchen sink with the tap on so that you can quickly get the zipper under water if the flame becomes too violent. It's a bit tricky because the flame is usually not so visible in zipper plastic.

Pin the zipper in the middle of your makeup bag and sew with zigzag stitches. Leave the zipper halfway open when sewing, so that you can turn it inside out when you have finished sewing.

When the zipper is sewn onto the fabric it is time to cut the fabric in between. First cut the opening and then trim the edges.

Now it's time to sew the long and short sides together on the makeup bag. Use 1 cm / 3/8" seam allowance.

Fold the small corners and pin them against each other, so that the seams are against each other. Sew all the four corners, use 1 cm seam allowance.
Turn it right side out and you are done!
If you want to you could decorate the make up bag with flowers. You find the description for the flowers here.
Enjoy the sewing and enjoy the International Lipstick day! As I always use to say; A day without lipstick is a lost day!
